There’s one particular food truck cruising the highways and byways of Calhoun County that has provided superb street food to festival goers and basic hungry working folk alike since 2021. Big Mike’z Rolling Kitchen has set a course to bring its unique spin on convenient finger foods and delish desserts to events in our area with a smile. Let’s “dig in ” to what they offer.

Big Mike’Z served some scrumptious street food at the Anniston Museum’s 44th Annual Heritage Festival this past Saturday, February 17. It was the perfect choice to deliver hot food to go on that frigid winter day. The Heritage Festival is our community’s opportunity to celebrate Black History Month. The focus of the festival is an oral competition for area students ranging from Pre-K all the way to high school seniors. They typically perform recitations before a panel of judges by Black authors for cash prizes and ribbons. This event is one of the highlights of what the Anniston Museum hosts annually, and takes place in the Longleaf Event Center.

I arrived at the parking lot of the museum about 15 minutes before the crowd became more populated during the lunch break. A friendly face greeted me at the window of the food truck to take my order. A nice touch to their service is an electronic buzzer they hand you after you order to alert you when your order is up. That’s a much-desired perk when temps are in the 30s, as I could wait in my car until my order was ready.

Their truck prepares a variety of typical fare you’d get at a street festival–hamburgers topped with cheese, bacon, or other toppings, polish hot dogs smothered in onions, peppers, or even cheese and bacon. Other lunch-style snacks and meals from their menu include chicken wings with several options for sauces, bacon cheese fries, Cajun or bacon ranch fries, or a 2-piece pork chop plate.

Desserts are one of the specialties of Big Mike’z. You can get a basic funnel cake coated in powdered sugar, or upgrade to a strawberry funnel, peach cobbler funnel, banana pudding funnel, strawberry/banana funnel, or strawberry/oreo funnel. These decadent treats will be sure to send your sweet tooth into convulsions of ecstasy! And if you are one of those Southerners that must have everything fried–even your desserts–then Big Mike’z will serve you an order of hot, fresh deep fried Oreos.

I opted for the loaded polish and fries on my outing. The fat, roasted sausage was ultra-juicy, topped with brightly colored sauteed red, green, and orange bell peppers mixed with onions. The crispy crinkle fries were the perfect pairing to this filling entree.

Big Mike’z Rollling Kitchen has been a festival staple for countless events in Calhoun County like Oxford Fest, Anniston’s Fourth Friday, and more. They also set up at area businesses like the parking lot outside Martin’s Clothing Store in Oxford, Alex Beauty Supply in Anniston, the Bynum Community Center, Pelham Plaza in Jacksonville, or at their home address of 2120 Noble Street in Anniston. Big Mike’z has even ventured outside the county to places like downtown Talladega for special events going on.
